Hey Leader, welcome back! Thank you again for being here, I’m grateful.  In my previous post I highlighted my belief that you must “lead as a service” to your team members to maximize your leadership impact.

In this post, I’ll begin to walk through my personal leadership framework built on the “lead as a service” perspective – People First Leadership (PFL).

People First Leadership – How To Create Commitment, Engagement, and Pride in Your Team for Sustainable Success

I wrote this blog post series to teach the personal leadership framework that I’ve developed and refined throughout my career.  It’s been built and shaped with input and inspiration from so many great people…people who have led me, people I’ve led, and leadership experts I’ve followed.

I firmly believe this framework has been the single biggest contributor to my leadership success.  I’ve trained groups and mentored individuals for years using this framework and I hope you will find them valuable. 

I’ve broken my leadership framework in to 7 posts/lessons. I could write a whole book on the framework but have tried to keep the content brief enough to digest easily, while still detailed enough that you can identify tangible takeaways.

My deep desire is that you will use this framework (or pieces of it) to grow your leadership, positively influence your team, and reach new heights of success! I know you can do it and I hope this helps you.  Please let me know what you think in the comments section.

There Is A Wrong Way

I’ve seen leaders approach leadership all wrong. They focus on the wrong things. Or they want the right things but don’t know how to get them. Or they let outside variables influence them in negative directions. Whatever the reason, I believe it doesn’t have to be that hard if you’ll follow my framework. Anyone can do it, you can do it. Because…

It’s Simple!

This framework is very simple…and it’s meant to be.  It’s simple so that it’s easy to understand, implement, and use in an instant.  It’s simplicity gives it power and flexibility to fit any situation.  For example: 

  • Brand new leader?  Use this model to develop your leadership style. 
  • Taking over a new team?  Use this model to develop your 90 day transition plan. 
  • Coaching a low performing team member?  Use this model to create your plan to coach them up. 
  • Wanna take a high performing team even higher?  Use this model to reach even greater levels of success.

The 3 Step Framework

  1. People Must Be First – Create commitment from your team members to you as their leader
  2. Mission and Vision Come Second – Create engagement in your team members to their work
  3. Results Happen Third – Create pride in your team members from their results

Sustainable Success Comes From This Order

The specific order of these 3 steps is the key to the whole model.  If you go out of order things fall apart…but thinking and acting in this order leads to sustainable success because the 3 steps build on each other to make each one stronger, creating a flywheel effect (H/T to author Jim Collins). More on this in the last post of the series.
